Fantasy Sports Writers Association Draft Review

9/1/09

Drafted 8/26/09

This is the FSWA Annual Draft, I’m a first time participant and have to be very honest. I’m as excited as hell to attempt an ass whooping of the other experts in this thing.

Here's my league Draft Grid

There are 5 divisions of 12 teams, so 60 Fantasy Writers in total, that’s a deep field to weed through that includes some very accomplished Fantasy Site owners and writers.

The scoring is PPR and the lineup requirements are: 1QB 2RB 3WR 1K 1D/ST 1Flex(RB,WR,TE)

I’m looking for a deep roster in this format, and following the draft plan of waiting on either a TE or QB. In this draft I chose to wait on a TE.

This is a “What I was thinking” review…BFD had the #11 pick.

Round #1

Chris Johnson RB Tennessee-I know some of you could be bored as hell watching me take him time and again in drafts, too bad…This guy is damn good, had near 300 touches in 2008 and the coach wants him more involved. I was thrilled he made it to #11 and took about 1 second to make the pick.

Other Guys I Considered: Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne. I figured one would be there for me after the turn but there was a good chance Johnson would be gone.

Round #2

Randy Moss WR Patriots-For this start alone I like the bottom of a 12 team draft this year. This is PPR, and yes I did select Moss who we have just behind Wayne. The only reason is? I wanted to change it up a little bit, I have Wayne in a ton of leagues and with Moss I consider the two of them interchangeable as the #2/#3 WR.

Other Guys I Considered: None

Round #3

Chad Ochcocinco WR Bengals-He’s our Comeback Player, and now most of the FF world is jumping on him. Even if he flakes out on me I think I have enough depth to cover for him. His Pre Season has been impressive, he looks fast and strong so I’m excited to have him on the roster with Moss.

Other Guys I Considered: Brandon Jacobs, Ray Rice: I didn’t want the RB here because these teams were letting them fall. So I figured I would get one in the 4th round or even wait and take another WR I liked as part of this team. I prefer to Flex the WR because I think the points scoring is a little more explosive.

Round #4

Vincent Jackson WR Chargers- This may have been a mistake, as a matter of fact this WAS a mistake. I need to remind myself sometimes of the “pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered” parable. I passed on Brandon Jacobs, who I love this year and Ray Rice who I love for a WR. That wasn;t a great decision; as much as I believe Jackson is going to be really good, I could have had another BFD projected Top 10 RB in Round #4 and that’s a helluva deal.

Other Guys I Considered: I just gave them to you, I’m mad at myself. Because the RB/WR combo I could have had after 5 rounds would have been crazy good. Instead I have to now “search” for the #2 RB.

Round #5

Philip Rivers QB Chargers-As mad as I was that I picked Vincent Jackson over the RBs, this kind of saved me a little. The “Hookup” is something I like, and getting Rivers a Top 5 QB in our opinion is a damn fine deal to go along with Jackson. I feel a little better.

Other Guys I Considered: I thought about Anthony Gonzalez for a second, but figured I had three monster WRs already and I’d find another quality player for that position later. Rivers was just too good a deal for me.

Here’s what I thought about after round #5.

I would take Larry Johnson as my #2 RB in the 6th assuming Team #12 passed.

I’d look for my “speculation” RBs in rounds 9 thru 11

A TE was no option earlier than the 10th, because I had taken the QB already AND most importantly I had to add some decent RBs to the roster, LJ is not an optimal #2 RB in PPR leagues, so going after depth became a bigger priority.

Round #6

Larry Johnson RB Chiefs- Here’s what I could have had:

Round #4 Brandon Jacobs, Round #5 Anthony Gonzalez…instead I have Vincent Jackson and Larry Johnson. That’s a screw up.

LJ is a fill in guy I think gets 15 carries a game and a chance at a TD. That doesn’t excite me, but I wanted to get a potential starting back with TD scoring opportunities.

Round #7

LenDale White RB Titans-I like this guy a lot more than most, and getting him with Chris Johnson was awesome, I think I may be able to start both of them weekly if the Titans stick to the 2008 game plan. I’m thrilled, and think the rest of the league let me off the hook with the Johnson/Jackson mistake.

Other Guys I Considered: Derrick Mason, but I figured he would make it back or one of the other two WRs I liked would get to me.

Round #8

Devin Hester WR Bears-I liked this pick more before seeing the Bears and Broncos go at it. Hester wasn’t looked at much by Jay Cutler, that could be because Champ Bailey was on him or it could be that Hester and Cutler aren’t clicking yet.

Other Guys I Considered: My hopes were Derrick Mason would make it, my backup guy was Donald Driver. Team 12 nailed those two picks, and I settled on Hester as my #4.

Round #9

Julius Jones RB Seahawks-We may be off our FF rocker at BFD here, but when the head coach says a guy is his “workhorse”, cuts a big back that scored a load of TDs for him at his previous job and then goes out to sign a 32 year old backup…we like the starter. Jones is not a TD machine, which will be Houshmandzadeh and John Carlson’s job. Jones will move the ball between the 20’s and get himself 7TDs. We’ll take that in the 9th round.

Other Guys I Considered: No one, from here on out I’m working what I wrote after the 6th round. I wanted to fill up the roster and get a couple of upside potential TEs.

Round #10

Josh Morgan WR 49ers- Another selection I liked more before Mike Singletary the 49ers head coach said Morgan is starting, but he’s shaky. I didn’t hesitate taking him, and believe he will be the #1 in SF all season, but his value is down a little bit IMO after those comments.

Round #11

Dustin Keller TE Jets-Man, waiting on a TE looks good this season, Keller is no Dallas Clark, but he’s going to be a part of the TD scoring in NY during the 2009 season, with rookie QB Mark Sanchez looking to check down from the Jets weak WR group. I was thrilled he was here, this is potentially my steal of the draft.

Round #12 thru #14

Michael Bush is a target guy in all leagues, he could be the starter in Oakland for a few games, and will be the TD vulture.

Brent Celek a backup TE? Hell yes when it’s a potential Top 12 guy that is similar to Keller but with a much better QB.

Correll Buckhalter- I made a comment that this guy doesn’t get enough love in FF drafts, one of the other FSW drafters cracked it’s because the backfield is crowded and Moreno is a #1 pick.

Really? Is this backfield crowded? LaMont Jordan is nowhere to be found, Moreno is already hurting and Buckhalter is a Free Agent the Broncos spent some money on.

I’ll hold him for a while and we’ll see what happens.

Overall: I had a good draft, but damn that one pick is eating at me. It could have been a great draft. This will be a fun league to follow all season, I have no idea what we win (honor, respect, pride)? But kicking some ass in a 60 team writers league would be fun…

2010 Review Comment: As I mentioned above I finished first (by a longway) in the regular season in this league. I finished 3rd overall, had I selected Ray Rice I would have won this baby in the first year I ever played in it. It was a great season, and this team really shows how I go about digging for FF players that will build a great FF team.
